How to choose a Newcastle solar installer

Most solar problems we're called out to fix are installation problems, not product problems. The panels are rarely the issue. Choosing who does the work matters more than choosing the brand.

Ask who physically does the install

Plenty of companies sell solar and subcontract every install to whoever is cheapest that week. Ask directly whether the electricians are employees. If the answer is vague, that tells you something about who you'll be chasing in three years.

Check they're actually local

A local address and a local phone number mean someone can come back. Newcastle has seen a steady stream of interstate operators sell hard, install fast and disappear, leaving customers to deal with manufacturers directly on warranty claims.

Twelve things worth asking

• Are your installers employees or subcontractors?
• What's your electrical licence number?
• Is the quote fixed, and what could change it?
• Is switchboard work included or excluded?
• Which circuits will be backed up in a blackout?
• What's the workmanship warranty, in years and in writing?
• Who handles a manufacturer warranty claim — you or me?
• What monitoring do I get and who sets it up?
• How long have you been installing in this area?
• Can I see photos of jobs you've done near me?
• What happens if the system underperforms?
• Who do I call in two years if something fails?

Be careful with pressure tactics

Today-only pricing, a rebate that's about to end this week, a quote that expires before you can get a second one — these are sales techniques, not market conditions. A system you'll own for twenty years deserves more than a day's consideration.

Look for real local work
