The $15,000 interest-free NSW loan, explained

The NSW Home Energy Saver program offers eligible households an interest-free loan of up to $15,000 for approved home energy upgrades, including solar and batteries. It's the reason a lot of Newcastle households who assumed storage was out of reach end up going ahead.

What it is, and what it isn't

It's finance. You repay every dollar, just without interest. That makes it genuinely valuable — the cost of the money is zero — but it's not a rebate and it shouldn't be presented as one. Anyone showing you a price with the loan folded in as a discount is misleading you.

How it stacks with the rebates

The rebates come off first. The federal battery discount and any STCs on the panels reduce the system price, and the loan applies to what's left. In practice that means a household with no cash upfront can often cover the remaining balance entirely with the loan.

Eligibility, in plain terms

  • Household, property, income and product eligibility rules all apply, and they're set by the NSW program, not by us.
  • The upgrade has to be an approved product installed by an approved supplier.
  • You apply through the program, and approval is theirs to give — a quote from us is not an approval.

What the repayments look like

Because there's no interest, the maths is simple: the amount borrowed divided by the term. Our estimator shows monthly and fortnightly illustrations alongside the after-rebate price, so you can see the repayment next to what you currently spend on power.

That comparison is the one that matters. For a lot of households the repayment lands close to what the battery saves off the evening peak, which is a very different conversation from finding thousands upfront.

Before you rely on it

Check your eligibility with the NSW program before you commit to a purchase on the assumption the loan will come through. We'll tell you what the system costs and what the rebates take off; the loan decision sits with the program.
