What a solar battery really costs in Newcastle

Ask three installers to quote a battery for the same Newcastle house and you'll get three very different numbers. That's not always dodgy pricing — it usually means the quotes cover different work. Here's what sits behind the figure.

What you're actually paying for

• The battery itself — capacity in kWh is the biggest single driver.
• The inverter, if you're getting an all-in-one system or replacing an ageing one.
• Switchboard work — older Newcastle boards often need upgrading to take a battery safely.
• Meter and network paperwork, including the Ausgrid connection application.
• Cable runs — a battery on the far side of the house from the switchboard costs more to wire than one beside it.
• Mounting, isolation and compliance work, plus commissioning and monitoring setup.

Capacity is not the whole story

It's tempting to compare quotes purely on dollars per kWh. That figure ignores inverter output, backup capability and expandability — three things that decide whether the system suits your house. A 10 kWh battery that can't run anything useful during a blackout is not comparable to a 10 kWh battery with whole-home backup.

The rebate question

The federal battery discount and an NSW incentive for eligible virtual power plant participation can reduce what you pay. How to compare quotes fairly

• Check whether switchboard work is included or listed as a possible variation.
• Ask which circuits are backed up in a blackout — 'backup ready' is not the same as backup installed.
• Confirm the usable capacity, not the nominal capacity.
• Ask who physically does the install: employees or subcontractors.
• Get the warranty terms in writing, for both the product and the workmanship.
