Solar in the middle of Newcastle city

A rooftop solar installation right in the heart of Newcastle — tight access, heritage streetscape, and a system that still had to be designed properly.

About this job

Inner-city Newcastle is the hardest place in the region to install solar well. Access is tight, streets are narrow, parking is limited and the buildings sit close together. All of that has to be planned before install day rather than discovered on it.

Roof planes in the city are rarely a clean north face. Around King Street and the cathedral end of town you get parapets, skillions, older tile and sheet metal side by side, and shading thrown by neighbouring buildings at different times of year. Panel placement here is a design decision, not a default layout.

Older inner-city switchboards are another reality. Many were never built with solar in mind, so we assess the board before quoting and price any upgrade into the original figure instead of raising it as a variation.

The result is a system that sits neatly on a city rooftop, generates through the working day, and doesn't look like an afterthought bolted onto a heritage street.
